If you dream of studying in Japan without spending a penny, you may want to consider getting the MEXT scholarship. This scholarship not only fully funds your education but also opens doors to cultural, academic, and professional experiences in one of the most developed countries in the world.

But what exactly is the MEXT scholarship? How do you apply, and why is this scholarship so special? Let’s dive in!

What Is the MEXT Scholarship?

Monbukagakusho, or known as MEXT, stands for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. It is a Japanese government scholarship program awarded to international students to pursue undergraduate, graduate, or vocational studies in Japan.

The students are selected based on the recommendation of the Japanese Embassy/Consulate General, the University, or the Authority.

This scholarship has been around for a long time and is considered one of the most prestigious in the world. Thousands of students apply from all corners of the world each year, but only the most exceptional make it through.

Types of MEXT Scholarships

There are seven types of MEXT Scholarship that you can choose from depending on your level and study goals:

  • Undergraduate Students

Designed for high school graduates who wish to continue their studies in Japan. The program typically lasts for five years, including one year of Japanese language courses if required. As for health majors such as medicine or pharmacy, the program may last up to seven years.

The monthly allowance is ¥117,000 per month, along with tuition and airfare waivers. Students can get this scholarship through an Embassy or university recommendation.

  • Research Students (Master’s/Doctoral and Non-Degree)

Intended for those who wish to pursue a master’s, Doctoral, or Professional degree programs, or those who want to be international research students.

Through an embassy or university recommendation, this scholarship covers a 6-month introductory Japanese language course – if necessary, followed by 1–2 years of core study or the length of the academic program.

Recipients will receive an allowance of approximately ¥143,000–¥145,000 per month, a tuition waiver, and round-trip airfare.

  • Teacher Training Students

This program is intended for active teachers with at least 5 years of teaching experience at the elementary, secondary, or teacher training college level.

This non-degree program lasts approximately 1.5 years, including pedagogical training and a one-year Japanese language course.

Participants receive a monthly allowance of approximately ¥143,000–¥145,000, free tuition, and round-trip airfare from their prospective home country. Unlike other programs, this program allows you to obtain recommendations only from the embassy.

  • Japanese Studies Students

This program is specifically designed for active international students studying the Japanese language or culture. This one-year program includes intensive Japanese language and culture courses.

Recipients receive a monthly allowance of approximately ¥117,000, a tuition waiver, and a round-trip airfare. Try to get recommendations from the embassy or university to get through the program.

  • College of Technology Students

This scholarship is intended for students wishing to study at Japanese universities of technology. The scholarship generally lasts four years, including one year of Japanese language courses (4.5 years for maritime majors).

Participants receive a monthly allowance of approximately ¥117,000, a tuition waiver, and round-trip airfare.

  • Specialized Training College Students

Open to students who wish to study at a technical or vocational school in fields such as business, IT, fashion, or culinary arts. The study period is approximately three years, with the first year devoted to Japanese language study.

A monthly allowance of approximately ¥117,000 is provided, tuition is waived, and airfare is provided. Similar to the teacher training program, this program requires recommendations from the embassy.

  • Young Leaders Program (YLP)

A special program for future leaders under the age of 40 and university or college graduates who have practical work experience, young public administrators, etc., who are expected to play an active role in Asia and other countries.

When and How to Apply

This 1-year program is only available through official overseas recommending organizations. Recipients will receive an allowance of approximately ¥242,000 per month, a tuition waiver, and a round-trip airfare.

The MEXT scholarship application period is generally open annually in two periods, depending on the chosen pathway. For the Embassy Recommendation pathway, the selection process typically begins between April and May.

Meanwhile, the University Recommendation pathway is generally open between December and February. Because each embassy or university can have slightly different timelines, it’s crucial to regularly monitor the official website of the Japanese Embassy in your country or the website of your chosen university to stay updated on information and deadlines.

Studying in Japan with a MEXT scholarship is not just about formal education; it’s also a valuable life experience. All of those experiences will be a significant plus for your future career, making you a more competent and highly competitive individual in the global workforce.
